Hutchison Paging workers were left confused yesterday when the company rescinded an offer to reward with generous payouts employees who resign. Customer service staff said they had been asked last week to consider resigning or working extra hours without pay. But the offer was withdrawn yesterday, leaving them wondering what the firm was up to.

The management expected about 100 workers to resign and would not rule out laying off people if necessary. Workers were also asked to sign an agreement to work 30 minutes longer each weekday, and extend Saturday hours from a half day to a full day, said a unionist. A woman who had worked for the company for 12 years said: 'I don't think we've seen the end of it yet.' The company could not be contacted last night.
