I AM glad that the police have learned their lessons promptly from the Lan Kwai Fong tragedy. In his report on the tragedy, Mr Justice Bokhary, made a number of suggestions to improve crowd control and co-ordination of various government departments and rescue forces, so that another tragedy might be prevented. Clearly, the police have taken note of these suggestions. I visited the Tsuen Wan and Wo Hop Shek Cemeteries to pray for the souls of my dead relatives on the Ching Ming festival day. I noticed that the routes to the peaks were not as crowded as in previous years, and it did not take as long to reach the peaks as it used to do. There were more police officers on duty at the cemeteries than in previous years and they had separate entrances and exits. They used megaphones to issue instructions to keep the crowds moving and there were ambulances on stand-by. Last year, struggling through the crowds to get to the graves was an exhausting experience. This year, the situation had improved. The police deserve credit for this improvement. WOO KWAN-YEE QUEENIE Kowloon
