A new centre aims to help school teachers use information technology in the classroom and develop programmes for IT education.
The Centre for Information Technology in School and Teacher Education, set up by the University of Hong Kong's Faculty of Education, is scheduled to open later this month. It will train teachers to help primary and secondary students become independent learners who are capable of finding information to solve problems.
Teachers will be provided with resources such as multi-media equipment to produce software tailor-made for enhancing IT education in schools.
The $11.5 million centre has ad vanced facilities such as a micro-teaching laboratory, and video-editing and multi-media production rooms.
It also provides a network-linked environment for teacher training programmes and seminars.
Dr Nancy Law Luk Wai-ying, centre director and senior lecturer of the university's Department of Curriculum Studies, said many schools lacked a channel to adapt IT into their curriculum.
'Many schools are equipped with the latest computers, but the support for teachers and students is inadequate. We are talking too much about IT education without recognising the students' needs,' Dr Law said.
