Let students read papers

Why you can trust SCMP

I refer to the letter headlined, 'Appalled', by Dr Jack Teh (South China Morning Post, September 30), who objected to the City University Library subscribing to Apple Daily and the Oriental Daily.

I am a secondary school student and I disagree with Dr Teh.

I cannot see any point in banning these newspapers from any library. They are certainly better than comic books.

Such books often contain vulgar language, so why doesn't Dr Teh suggest banning students from reading such comics? The news reported by these papers is objective, honest and extensive. There is both international and local news.

You can also read stories on finance, computers, politics and many other subjects. What is wrong with students using such newspapers to further their knowledge? All Hong Kong citizens enjoy freedom of speech. Everyone has the right to receive information, including college students.

I hope that the library will continue to subscribe to these two newspapers and by doing so provide students with a wider reading choice.
