Nearly everyone believes there is a responsibility to protect the environment, but only about eight per cent of people recycle anything, according to a survey.
Fewer than 20 per cent of the 5,955 people surveyed were involved in community clean-ups or environmental initiatives, the poll by the Environmental Campaign Committee showed.
Most were dissatisfied with their own environment, and more than two-thirds believed their own health was affected by a poor environment.
More than 80 per cent wanted more funds dedicated to cleaning up Hong Kong, according to the results released yesterday.
Younger people were more conscious of environmental issues, said Professor Peter Hills, convenor of the survey's sub-working group, because of education and media coverage.
'The older the person, the less aware they are,' said Ronnie Wong Man-chiu, chairman of the Environmental Campaign Committee.
