It is the job of the Vehicle Engineering Services (VES) division to ensure that the fleet of more than 7,000 vehicles from about 70 government departments and autonomous bodies is roadworthy.
From buses to ambulances, fire appliances to unique specialist machines such as the Tsing Ma Bridge inspection vehicle, if it has wheels and is working for the Government, then the chances are it is on the road thanks to this division of EMSD.
VES staff provide a host of professional services, encompassing vehicle maintenance and repair, recovery, customised vehicle procurement and body modification. They also carry out a comprehensive range of other vehicle-related services such as maintaining detailed vehicle service records, disposing of unserviceable vehicles and advising customers on vehicle accident and claim assessments.
The division operates two workshops at Caroline Hill Road on Hong Kong Island and Ma Tau Kok Road in Kowloon, as well as four other strategically-located depots, providing blanket coverage throughout Hong Kong.
With the best maintenance in the world, however, vehicles can, and do, break down, so the division offers a 24-hour recovery service.
Its vehicle maintenance programme is designed to ensure that the government fleet operates efficiently and safely at all times, with the emphasis firmly on fault prevention.
