Chinese golf star Zhang Lianwei has withdrawn from next month's Perrier Hong Kong Open after receiving an invitation to play on the Japanese Tour.

Zhang was pulled out of this year's event by China Tour officials who want him to gain exposure in Japan, it emerged yesterday.

'Zhang is very excited to act as an ambassador to Japan and we simply felt that it was essential for him to be exposed on the Japan PGA in order to build his profile in Japan's important and lucrative golf marketplace,' said Alwyn Tai, managing director of China Tour organisers Richtone Worldwide.

But Zhang will be playing in Hong Kong the week following the Open, when the Asian PGA's season-ending Omega Championship is held at the Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club.

Zhang's compatriots and fellow members of China's Dunhill Cup team, Wu Xiang Bing and Cheng Jun , were yesterday confirmed for the November 26-29 Open.
