Showing an increasingly mature singing style with each new album, Canto-pop star Edmond Leung Hon-man is hoping to start writing more of his own material.

  His 13th album - Star Flicker - was released earlier this year. Comparing his performance on his 1991 debut album Thinking Of You, Waiting For You, his latest is a sophisticated product, with some obvious improvements.

    After finishing Form Five at Lutheran Middle School, Leung got his major break in the New Talent Award Contest in 1989.

  The industrious singer, who turns 27 on Thursday, admitted it was difficult for him to control his breathing when singing, but said he had finally overcome the difficulty.

  He said his singing had become more mature because he finally realised how to control his moods.

 His second solo album - Confused Affection - had too much jazz and blues influence for his fans' taste, he said.

  Leung said his biggest success was the second platinum award for his fourth album, Not Willing To Be Alone.

  'I was very pleased with the success of the two hits - Love Once in a Lifetime and In First Place.'   In 1996, he earned his third platinum award for Love And Passion, which sold 50,000 copies.

  Last year, his Steal Kisses and Best Friend albums went double platinum, selling more than 100,000 copies each.

  Until his smash hit Red Hot Motion La La La with Sammi Cheng Sau-man, Andy Hui Chi-on and Aaron Kwok Fu-shing in 1992, Leung preferred to sing ballads.

  'I want to have more fast numbers now because I do not want to limit myself to just one type of singing.

  'A singer needs to change all the time. I am talking to my record company to see if they can put more fast numbers in my next album.'   Although he is busy recording new songs for his upcoming Cantonese and Putonghua solo albums, Leung said he needed the buzz he got from performing live.

  'Performing before an audience gives me satisfaction I cannot get from working in the recording studio. I also intend to use more special effects for my stage performances.'   Leung is excited about writing his own songs.

 'I recently bought the equipment I need to compose songs. It should be fun.'   Leung said he loved to lead a quiet life at home, playing the piano and saxophone.

   He also enjoys sport, especially football. Until he got hooked on music, Leung was heading for fame as a footballer playing for Hong Kong.

  Though his Cantonese album is due early next year, some songs should be available soon.

 However, his long-awaited Putonghua album will not be released until he finishes shooting a film with director Kwan Kam-pang. The film will be released early next year. Leung starred in Mongkok Storm and I Have My Own Craze last year.

  'Although I am into acting, too,   singing remains my first love,' Leung said.
