Safety lights for cyclists earned Sonca Products' a Federation of Hong Kong Industries Certificate of Merit in Consumer Product Design.

 The series of four lights consists of two for the front, which feature bright halogen beams, and two for the rear with incandescent illumination.

  Some are also equipped with flashing LED side lights. Easy to mount, the lights operate on AA or AAA batteries and are designed to meet British Standards Institution requirements.

  'Our initial design brief for the safety cycle lights included 'see' and 'be seen' criteria,' Michael Ho, the firm's marketing director, said.

  'With the halogen front beams, cyclists can clearly see their way ahead. The side flashing LED lights provide warning signals to motorists and pedestrians.'   Mr Ho said the lights could be easily detached from their mounting brackets and used as a flashlight. They also had recessed switches that prevented them from being accidentally turned on.

  Designed in a modern, streamlined shape, the lights were under development for six months before going on the market last year.

   Sonca Products holds more than 150 original designs and patents for its products. Its design and product development team numbers more than 20.

  Mr Ho said while the company was honoured by the award, such recognition was ultimately good for Hong Kong.

  'The benefits for us are that we have been able to contribute to strengthening Hong Kong's image in terms of original designs and innovations, which will bring additional revenue to the SAR,' he said. 'We want to show the world that Hong Kong is capable of original designs.'   Last year, Sonca Products won a consumer product design award for its double-barrel flashlights, which employed a unique parallel-series circuitry design.

     The company has also won awards for its products from the United States, Australia and Britain.

  Established in 1954, Sonca Products specialises in the design, manufacture and marketing of battery-operated lighting products, including flashlights and lanterns, which it exports to 120 countries.

 The company's installed production capacity is 40 million lighting pieces annually at its factory in the mainland, making it the world's largest lighting products manufacturer by volume, Mr Ho said.

   It also manufactures health-care, security and electronic products and battery-making equipment.

  Sonca Products earned its ISO 9002 certificate in 1993 and follows a total quality management approach.

Besides manufacturing, it operates a trading department which provides customers with one-stop buying for a host of products.

  Services include product sourcing in the mainland and SAR, price negotiation, quality screening, pre-shipment inspection and shipment consolidation.
