Piers Litherland was admirably lucid on the question of Peking versus Beijing (letter, South China Morning Post, October 26). I have a different grouse. Why, oh why, do those who insist on Beijing say the word as though it were a French name, with a 'j' as in Jacques, when it ought to be a 'j' as in Jill? To misquote Professor Higgins, it doesn't really matter what you say as long as you pronounce it properly. MAY HOLDSWORTH Pokfulam
