The widow of a patient who died after being denied a liver transplant is seeking a judicial review.

Leung Mong-han, 36, wife of Chow Yam-fun, 36, who died on October 21, two days after a request for a transplant was rejected, yesterday sought help from Deputy Director of Legal Aid Harry Mak Fai-man.

She was advised of her right to seek a review of the decision by the Human Organ Transplant Board, which refused permission for the operation.

'He could have lived,' Mrs Chow said. A judicial review would find out whether the law was broken and what the board's responsibility was.

Mrs Chow claimed the board had waited for more than 10 hours before rejecting her request for an transplant using a liver from Chow's mainland nephew.

Mrs Chow said she had only learned the next day from a newspaper that a liver patient could not undergo a transplant from a distant relative unless the patient could sign a consent form. Chow was in a coma at the time. Mrs Chow offered part of her own liver, but it was too late.
