Tchaikovsky's four-act ballet Swan Lake sees Princess Odette turned into a white swan by the magician Rothbart. When she regains human form for a few hours Prince Siegfried falls in love with her and swears to rescue her. At the ball at which Siegfried is expected to announce his bride, Rothbart appears with his daughter Odile in the form of a black swan so that Siegfried mistakes her for Odette. Odile bewitches Siegfried and he becomes betrothed to her. But when Odette appears Siegfried realises his mistake. He rushes to the lake to acknowledge his faithlessness and she forgives him. Rothbart conjures up a storm and the lovers are drowned.
