The mother of 'Big Spender' made an eleventh-hour bid yesterday for her son to be transferred back to Hong Kong for trial.
But the plea to Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa has 'close to zero chance' because the Guangzhou Intermediate People's Court will announce its decision at 8am tomorrow.
Cheung Tze-keung's mother yesterday petitioned at Central Government Offices before the Executive Council's weekly meeting.
'My son is a Hong Kong citizen and the crimes were alleged to be committed here,' Tang Sai-mui, 64, said. 'So I hope Tung Chee-hwa can transfer my son back to Hong Kong for trial.
'That way millions of people here could witness the hearing run fairly. And I could see my son, too.' The widow has not seen her son since he went to the mainland in January. She and Cheung's wife, Law Yim-fong, have said they will not go to Guangzhou for the verdict.
Executive Councillor Henry Tang Ying-yen said the chances of transferring Cheung to Hong Kong were slim. 'The chance is close to zero as the trial has gone so far and the verdict will be delivered soon,' he said.
