AN Australian footballer who helped the South China team win the Viceroy Cup two weeks ago was yesterday fined $10,000 and ordered to pay $4,000 compensation and $1,000 costs after a court heard he had assaulted an elderly man. George Haniotis, 26, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm on April 7 in Causeway Bay. The court heard that Haniotis assaulted Mr Lai Wing after the two men bumped into each other. Defence lawyer Mr Gabriel Leung-Jackson-Lipkin urged the court to take into consideration Haniotis' guilty plea and co-operation with the police. Magistrate Mr Peter Line told Haniotis: 'You behaved disgracefully. Because of a loss of temper in public you struck an elderly man in the face. ''If it had been more than one blow, I might have sent you to prison. It was an extremely stupid and selfish thing to do.''
