United States Customs has named 63 Hong Kong companies convicted of illegally transshipping textile products through third countries or using other illegal shipping techniques.

 The latest list brings the total of SAR companies convicted of similar violations to 187, including 22 involved in multiple violations.

 The list was released to all import specialists, entry officers, inspectors, international trade specialists, importers and brokers.

 Dick Crichton, international trade manager at the Office of Strategic Trade in Washington, said a co-operation agreement between Hong Kong and US textile trade officials in September had given US investigators more access to Hong Kong government files.

 Customs officials have searched the records for companies involved in US violations and released names periodically.

 'We are going through them as quickly as we can,' he was quoted as saying by the Journal of Commerce.

 Companies involved in illegal transshipments evade US quotas by shipping goods through a third country.

 Firms convicted of falsely claiming Hong Kong as the country of origin for textile products shipped to the US face stringent scrutiny from Customs.

 Port directors will require them to furnish proof of production of any US-bound shipment.
