The lawyer for Cheung Tze-keung plans to team up with an international law firm to help appeal against his client's death sentence.
Solicitor Ivan Tang Yiu-wing was due to travel to Guangzhou last night to meet the international team to discuss the case. He said the top law firm was based in Beijing with offices around the world, but it did not want him to reveal its identity.
Mr Tang's move comes four days after Cheung, 43, and four members of his gang were found guilty of kidnapping billionaires Victor Li Tzar-kuoi and Walter Kwok Ping-sheung, illegally possessing and smuggling firearms and robbery between 1996 and 1997.
They were sentenced to death by the Guangzhou Intermediate People's Court on Thursday and ordered to forfeit HK$1.3 billion said to be proceeds of their crimes. They have another six days to appeal.
