AMID the fuss over the minute traces of high-inducing tetrahydro-cannabinol in The Body Shop's hemp products, we were intrigued to discover one country had reservations unrelated to dope.

Running down a list of The Body Shop's international markets we noted the predictable 'Department of Health has a problem with Cannabis sativa being listed' (Ireland); 'Not suitable for market - cannabis leaf design causing contention' (Kuwait); and 'Lots of bad press re: hemp/drugs' (Norway). But there was a different note beside Germany.

'Aluminium componentry is a problem,' it said.

Fearing the Germans were worried about aluminium in the cosmetics and the danger of Alzheimer's disease, we put an urgent call through to Dr Barbara Brockway, The Body Shop's company chemist.

No, she laughed. The Germans wanted more aluminium, not less. In the packaging, that is. Apparently, they are keen to recycle their aluminium waste.

'We like the Germans,' Dr Brockway said.
