Bigger server trend bodes well for Sun

Networking has moved from the high- end of business right down to small offices of only a handful of people.

At the heart of most networks is a server that pumps out data and information. It is the life blood of a networked system.

Not too long ago, Sun Microsystems was known as the maker of engineering workstations. About 10 years ago, however, Sun branched out into the server market and has done extremely well.

Having created much of the backbone of the Internet, Sun has also been supplying large businesses with Unix servers as well.

An interesting trend in servers is that they seem to be getting bigger - almost as big as some mainframes - while the clients, the PCs, for example, seem to be getting smaller.

Paul Li, director of marketing for Sun in Hong Kong, said he thought servers would tend to get bigger because it would bring down the total cost of ownership.
