Bird flu pair win top award

Two leading health professionals have won a top award for their work in fighting the killer bird flu.

Director of Health Dr Margaret Chan Fung Fu-chun and world influenza expert Professor Ken Shortridge, of the department of microbiology at the University of Hong Kong, will receive Thailand's Prince Mahidol Award.

Chairman of the International Award Committee at the Prince Mahidol Award Foundation Dr Natth Bhamarapravati said Dr Chan's contribution towards public health measures had successfully curtailed the influenza virus outbreak.

'Professor Shortridge and his group identified the influenza H5N1 virus in chickens as the principle source of human infection which killed six out of 18 infected people,' he added.

King Bhumibol Adulyadej will present the award on January 28.
