A fine performance from Derek Fung and an exceptional showing by Brad Schadewitz should ensure the SAR's Hong Kong Open interest will last beyond today's second-round cut. Both Fung and Schadewitz are well placed after the first round, with Schadewitz in an unlikely second spot after recording a superb five-under-par 66. The Hong Kong-based American carded six birdies and one bogey to finish the day tied with John Daly and Taiwan's Wang Ter-chang. Two strokes back from Schadewitz on three under par is Fung, who will be seeking to make the Hong Kong Open cut for the first time. On yesterday's evidence, that target is well within Fung's reach. After a slow start, he snared his first birdie on the par-three fifth hole, but went to even when he bogeyed the 10th. He was able to put that setback behind him, though, and birdies on the 14th, 16th and 17th holes have left him in a comfortable position. 'To be honest, I didn't really feel I was playing that good early on,' Fung said. 'But I started hitting the ball towards the end and made a few birdie chances, which I was able to take.' Hong Kong's Dominique Boulet also had one of his better rounds, finishing in a cluster of players locked at a one-under-par 71. Boulet's round could have been better though, and the Hong Kong player will be disappointed at dropping shots after going to three under par at one stage. 'I'm quite pleased with that. My swing feels quite comfortable and it needs to be because the course is playing the longest I've ever seen it,' Boulet said. 'It's a solid start for me and hopefully I can build on it.' The best of Hong Kong's amateur challengers was Chris Tang, who finished the day at two-over-par after shooting a respectable 73. Tang carded two birdies and four bogeys during a mixed round.
