Teenage motorcycle sensation Cheung Wai-on's triumph in the ACM Trophy race at the Macau Grand Prix made up for his disappointing effort in the All-Japan Championship earlier this year. Hong Kong's most promising rider showed a clean pair of heels in the novice race as he stormed to victory in the annual showpiece at the Portuguese enclave. Seventeen-year-old Wai-on had arrived in Macau after failing to make any impact in the gruelling All-Japan series, where he pitted his skills against the country's best young riders. But Wai-on - astride a Honda RS - proved he was streets ahead of his talented rivals in Macau, clocking 29 minutes 41.89 seconds for the 10-lap race. He beat Paulo Henriques, who was also riding a Honda RS, by a whopping 24 seconds as the Portuguese rider came home in 30:05.95. Another Portuguese rider, Manuel Vira, steered his Yamaha to third place in 30:13.528. Wai-on was more than a minute quicker than Hong Kong's next fastest finisher, Chow Ho-wan, who ended up fourth in 30:18.708. 'It's great to come back to Macau and win the race in front of a huge crowd. I felt confident of winning the race even though I didn't do so well in the All-Japan Series. Macau is one of my favourites circuits,' Wai-on said. The teenager was amazed by Mike Rutter's victory in the 32nd Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix later in the day. Rutter, 25, beat his Honda teammate Ian Simpson to take the coveted motorcycle title on his 750 cc RC 45 by 6.2 seconds - one of the biggest victory margins in recent years.
