Introduction of new safety rules forcing planes to refuel en route could mean delays for thousands of passengers on trans-Pacific and some European flights.

The Federal Aviation Administration has asked airlines operating Boeing 747s to stop running fuel pumps until tanks are dry, because of risk of explosion.

Cathay Pacific said the disruption would add about three hours to the 15-hour flight time from Los Angeles to Hong Kong.
