LAWYERS and politicians yesterday called on the Government to speed up its negotiations with the mainland on the transfer of criminals and to make its stance on the matter clear.

Bar Association chairwoman Audrey Eu Yuet-mee said the Government lacked clear principles in the negotiations.

She is worried that when the talks are concluded, the results might not be accepted by Hong Kong people.

'Up to now, the Government has not said clearly what its stance is in two problems,' Ms Eu said.

'Are they standing their ground on certain principles regarding fugitives or the death sentence? In these matters the Government has never said clearly what its bottom line is.' Ms Eu said the Government had been passive in both the 'Big Spender' and the Telford Gardens murders case and called for more transparency in negotiations.

Democratic Party chairman Martin Lee Chu-ming said he was more concerned about the trend of the mainland trying cases committed in the SAR, as is evidenced by the Telford Gardens murders case.
