Compaq Computer is launching new service packages targeting business users as it plans to shift responsibility for standard services to resellers, while concentrating the in-house focus on larger corporate customers. There are three key types of CarePaq service package - installation and start-up of Windows NT Server, Exchange Server and Web server software; extended hardware warranty for Compaq servers, workstations, desktops and notebook; and software support for client applications as well as server operating systems. The first two are expected to be handled mainly by resellers, while software technical support will be delivered by telephone by Compaq staff. 'It is still subject to the requirement of customers, which can specify their preference in the registration card in the service box they buy,' said Leo Ho, product development manager for greater China. Also in the service box are cash coupons, to be used for additional services. It added flexibility for specific needs without creating too many confusing service packages, said Mr Ho. Hardware warranty service packages vary with response time, and the number of hours a day and the number of days a week of support. For example, a three-year contract for 24-hour, and everyday, on-site support within four hours' response time costs US$713. It includes any cost for replacement of parts and components. The costs for CarePaq service packages range from $300 to more than $2,000. The industry trend was to make services more tangible and clearly defined, and easier for customers to choose, said Howard Hsu, senior service analyst at IDC.
