Frontline police are to get extra protection thanks to a $400,000 investment in bulletproof helmets.
The British-made helmets, each weighing 1.4kg, will be used in situations where suspects may be armed.
'They are the first bulletproof helmets issued to our frontline police officers,' Senior Inspector Wong Tsz-bun from the Support Bureau said.
'About 400 ballistic helmets have been handed to the Emergency Unit, Police Tactical Unit and serious crime squads like the Organised Crime and Triad Bureau.
'The helmets will only be used when our officers have to deal with a situation where firearms have been used or we suspect the culprit is armed,' Mr Wong said.
It is understood officers from the Special Duties Unit, also called the 'Flying Tigers', have already been issued with similar helmets.
