In his column on November 16, the redoubtable Kevin Sinclair proposed a tentative advertisement for the new Tourism Commissioner.

The job spec called for a Superman, one who could 'work 24 hours a day and not mind constant ignorant criticism'. It seems I was not the only person who immediately thought of Clinton Leeks as the obvious candidate for the job. This particular Clinton, unlike the Clinton across the Pacific, has an 'unimpeachable' track record. If ever there was someone who has proved be can achieve the impossible, and even throw in the occasional miracle, it is he.

It is encouraging to see from Kevin Sinclair's column on November 30, that what began as a little quiet lobbying from a few like-minded tourism professionals has grown into a clamour of enthusiastic support.

Tourism is still our Number One export industry, however it is measured: whether simply by counting direct receipts, or as total revenue multiplied throughout the economy. It is a major investor in both people and capital. Every citizen contributes something to tourism, whether consciously or unconsciously, positively or negatively. When tourism is booming our self-confidence as a community is boosted. When tourism is down, we all share its misfortunes.

It is hard to think of one government department whose policies do not at some time affect the tourism product and the markets it serves. So it is vital that we find someone who can challenge policy when it needs challenging; who can initiate and drive forward new policies; who can cut through the Gordian knots of bureaucracy when necessary; and who can lead and inspire all stakeholders to revitalise this City of Life.

Comes the hour, comes the man. The fates have conspired to place Mr Leeks on the job market at exactly the right time. Let us hope that the opportunity does not pass. You do not have to be a Democrat to support the campaign to 'Vote for Clinton'.
