The majority of 61 children struck down by a mystery viral infection at a kindergarten were still unable to go to school yesterday.

The Department of Health said the outbreak, which affected almost a third of 200 children at St Rose of Lima School in Kowloon Tong, had stabilised.

But parents whose children developed flu-like symptoms or upper respiratory tract infections were advised to keep them at home and seek medical advice.

Four children remained in hospital - three in Queen Mary and one in Baptist - where they were in stable condition last night.

'The number of kids taking the day off is similar to yesterday. It may be because parents are taking extra precautions and getting their children to take more rest,' a department spokesman said.

'We have only recorded one or two new cases, which shows that the outbreak has been stabilised.' Doctor Mak Kwok-hang said the adenovirus, which causes upper respiratory tract infections all year round, was one of the suspects.
