Chek Lap Kok was touted as one of the world's most technologically advanced airports, but a string of glitches turned its opening day into one of the biggest IT foul-ups seen in Hong Kong.

Problems started from its July 6 opening day when the airport computer systems malfunctioned.

The Flight Information Display System (Fids) showed corrupt information on monitors, affecting baggage and cargo-handling and assignment of aircraft to parking bays.

As a result, numerous flights were delayed, many passengers were not able to retrieve baggage immediately, and both airline staff and travellers were confused about gate allocations for flights which were to depart or arrive.

The system at SuperTerminal 1, the air-cargo facility, crashed on day one, paralysing freight-handling.

Even making a phone call proved difficult, as access to working telephone lines was limited and mobile phone servers were overloaded.
