Hong Kong Housing Society is seeking to turn some of the identified sandwich-class housing sites into other residential developments following the scrapping of the subsidised-flat scheme.

Society property development manager Donald Hughes said it was in discussions with the Housing Bureau to have some of the sites approved for alternative developments.

Options included development of senior-citizens homes, flat-for-sale or rental-housing projects to help facilitate the society's redevelopment of old estates, as well as possible sites for the proposed mixed-residential development.

Mr Hughes said the Government had shown support for the society's development programme and it was hopeful it would get some sites for such developments.

According to the society's annual report this year, projects on 12 sites earmarked for sandwich-class housing development in various locations were at the planning stage.

The report said the sites together would provide more than 20,000 flats if the projects went ahead.

Development had been suspended after the Government recently scrapped the subsidised-housing development scheme.
