I refer to the letter concerning cyclists using Bowen Road (South China Morning Post, December 4), and would like to support John Ho's views in regard to enforcing the ban.
Unfortunately, as a cycling enthusiast I would like to add that many cyclists are forced to use Bowen Road because, as most people would agree, the roads in the SAR are very dangerous to cycle on. Of the four government-approved mountain bike trails, three are completely inappropriate for cycling on. The only approved trail that is suitable is in Lantau which is not easily accessible. With the recent publicised ban of all bicycles from the beautiful and safe High Island Reservoir Man Yee Road, cycling is practically outlawed, except alongside highly polluted highways such as the Tolo Harbour cycle track.
In most countries, mountain bikers and other outdoor enthusiasts have learned to co-exist and enjoy the countryside together. It is a shame that with the SAR's abundant trail and road network within our country parks, cyclists have to resort to breaking the law in order to enjoy their sport. This incidentally is now an Olympic and Asian Games sport, with Hong Kong being represented by three riders at the Bangkok games.
