Dr Alice Piera Lam Lee Kiu- yue has been appointed the new chairman of the University Grants Committee (UGC) with effect from February 1.
Dr Lam will succeed Dr Edgar Cheng Wai-kin, who will take up his new post as head of the Central Policy Unit early next year. Dr Lam's appointment is for three years.
Secretary for Education and Manpower Joseph Wong Wing- ping paid tribute to Dr Cheng.
'We are grateful for Dr Cheng's exemplary leadership and sterling contribution to the work of UGC since April this year. The period under Dr Cheng's leadership was brief but momentous for the UGC sector,' Mr Wong said.
In welcoming Dr Lam's appointment as the next chairman of UGC, Mr Wong said Dr Lam was committed to serving the community, particularly in the education sector.
'Dr Lam is at present a member of the UGC.
