Bank of America is to sack 89 staff from its Quarry Bay office as part of a regional consolidation of its retail banking business. Earlier this month BankAmerica announced it would sell its consumer banking and credit card businesses in Taiwan, Singapore and India after deciding it had little hope of building significant market share in these areas. A spokesman confirmed the job losses were a result of the consolidation and involved staff who had supported operations in these countries. The bank's spokesman stressed no positions would be eliminated until the end of February and some would not go until the middle of next year. 'We will focus on existing staff filling any expansion plans for Hong Kong,' the spokesman said. The job losses will include 14 expatriate employees. BankAmerica and its subsidiaries employ 1,600 people in Hong Kong. Earlier this month, the bank cut 300 jobs in its United States brokerage unit.
