THERE was a whiff of innuendo in the letter from J. Reeves (South China Morning Post, April 16), implying that those who say they represent Filipino maids see Hongkong as a bad place, with mean, racist, selfish, and inhuman employers.
The group now represented by this union having answered well over 2,000 calls for help (principally from Filipinos) since last July, we must count ourselves among those implied criticised.
It is true that agencies such as ours, hearing, as we do, from workers with problems, might easily form a one-sided view.
However, we are not blind, and we do in fact realise (even if sometimes we have to force ourselves to remember) that the employers about whom we receive complaints are only a small minority.
In short, by no means are all employers bad, just as not all domestic helpers are angels.
Your correspondent's letter does contain a good point, in the suggestion that a message be sent to prospective helpers about Hongkong not being a bed of roses.
