SOME $620 million is to be spent over the next decade to reduce the noise made by Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation (KCRC) trains.

The project includes wholly or partly enclosing stations and some sections of track with noise-absorbing walls and ceilings to stop up to one-third of noise from annoying an estimated 50,000 residents.

The first phase would see covers and barriers set up at Tai Wo, Tai Wai, Tai Po Market, Sheung Shui, Fotan, Fanling and Mongkok stations by 1998 to benefit about 37,500 residents, the KCRC said yesterday.

Noise levels in these areas are expected to be lowered by five to 25 decibels to within the limit of 55 decibels for residential zones.

KCRC senior manager Mr Maurice O'Brien said the installation would be done after midnight when train services were stopped.
