Hong Kong was shooting itself in the foot if it continued to focus on the July-August air-cargo fiasco instead of moving forward, an executive warned.

Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminal (Hactl) managing director Anthony Charter said that as the SAR had something to be proud of - Hactl's SuperTerminal 1, the world's most advanced air-cargo terminal - 'we should get past the stage of being critical and look forward'.

'Hong Kong's air-cargo service, provided by SuperTerminal 1, is second to none,' he said.

Hactl's image as a world-class air-cargo handler was heavily battered during the July-August air-cargo crisis last year.

Soon after the new airport at Chek Lap Kok opened on July 6, Hactl halted almost all operations because of computer glitches. The company resumed full operations at the end of August, eight days ahead of schedule.

Hactl suffered an estimated loss of $2.9 billion in revenues, equal to 0.22 per cent of Hong Kong's projected gross domestic product for last year.

Hactl is determined to regain its reputation.
