Architects yesterday gave Hong Kong Park a top award for design.

Urban Services Department park managers were presented with a certificate from the Hong Kong arm of the American Institute of Architects for the park's design. The same award for urban design was presented to the department for the Hong Kong Stadium in January 1995.

A department spokesman said it was 'a jewel in the crown' for the park, which features an aviary, clock tower, terraced gardens, fountains and a marriage registry.

Built on the former site of Victoria Barracks in Central, the 10-hectare park has attracted more than one million visitors a year since it opened in May 1991.

The Urban Council facility was jointly developed by the Hong Kong Jockey Club, which donated about $170 million to the $390 million construction cost.

The park's designers, Wong Tung and Partners Limited, attributed the prize to the diversity of features.
