Hongkong Telecom has slashed mobile phone rates in an effort to stop customers switching to other networks.

From March 1, mobile number portability will allow users to switch to another network and keep their number.

Grace Leung Sai-ling, director of marketing and sales of mobile services, said Hongkong Telecom 'would be able to maintain its customer base with the introduction of [number transfer] after a period of confusion'.

She said it had become more prevalent for customers to switch networks, with 70 per cent expected to switch this year compared with 50 per cent last year.

'We lost most of our customers to PCS [personal communications service] operators, but we have also gained some from people looking for quality services,' she said.

The cut price rate comes with the company's 1010 and One2Free bands.
