China Beer steps up battle over Tsingtao

China Beer (Hong Kong) will issue a statement early next week to further clarify its position in the legal tangle with H share Tsingtao Brewery over the rights to the Tsingtao trademark in Hong Kong, according to sources.

The sources said China Beer, indirectly controlled by the powerful China Resources (Holdings), had originally planned to make the statement yesterday.

China Beer - the former distributor of Tsingtao beer in Hong Kong - would explain a number of issues, including the legality of its rights to the trademark, they said.

It would also seek to clarify some local press reports it believed had not accurately reflected the episode.

The dispute began when Tsingtao Brewery dumped China Beer as its Hong Kong distributor last month.

It then launched legal proceedings after China Beer ran newspaper advertisements stating it was the registered owner of the Tsingtao trademark in Hong Kong.
