I refer to Ming's January 6 cartoon and the letter on the same day from M. A. Antonio, regarding Cathay Pacific.

Considering the cosmopolitan diversity of passengers on Cathay flights, it makes sense for the company not to exclusively hire staff from Hong Kong.
Cathay's cabin crew union has challenged the logic of this policy. Also, in a pay dispute protest, its members have threatened to stop smiling. This, in an industry, where all employees are supposed to make a passenger feel safe and relaxed with a reassuring smile.
It takes a lot more effort to frown than to smile and as the cartoon convincingly shows, Asian women are street-wise and will not work harder if they do not have to.
