The Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong is to follow the Democrats in debating its future in view of the changing post-handover circumstances.

Chairman Tsang Yok-sing said he planned to hold a whole-day discussion in April on the positioning and development of the party, which he said 'should prepare to become a ruling party'.

Mr Tsang said in an interview with the South China Morning Post that the party, formed in 1992, faced a similar problem to that of the Democrats.

'We are also at the crossroads . . . We have had a lot of discussions in the past year. We can only come to a double-negative conclusion: we are neither a pro-government nor an opposition party.

'We don't know what we are. We then decided not to argue about it for the time being and do whatever was conducive to our development,' he said.

Mr Tsang admitted the DAB had a weaker ideological foundation than the Democrats.
