Motorola Semiconductor's six awards last year has helped open new markets and generated increased interest in the company's products, according to Joe Yiu, vice-president and general manager, Asia-Pacific.

The company's international headquarters in Austin, Texas, circulated Hong Kong's success worldwide, Mr Yiu said.

The company received many enquiries about its products as publicity about the awards spread.

'Clearly this success is something we are proud of. We think, especially in Hong Kong, that there is a lot of recognition for these awards,' he said.

'Winning the awards has generated a lot interest. They brought great prestige to our people in Hong Kong, in Austin and, indeed, at Motorola entities around the world.

'Before our success, I would say we were seen here as a manufacturing entity because we build and assemble semiconductor components. But winning these six awards has fully established Motorola Hong Kong as a source of technological innovation, a powerhouse in terms of technology development. And it has shown that our factory in Hong Kong can compete with the best factories in the world.' Mr Yiu said the award for quality was particularly pleasing.
