A traffic policeman plunged 12 floors to his death in Kwai Chung yesterday, days after his girlfriend ended their relationship.

The brother of Kwok Ngai-man, 30, said the constable had also been depressed because he felt he was unsuccessful in his career.

He told his brother he was unhappy because he was still a constable after working in the force for about 10 years, while most of his friends had been promoted.

Kwok was the second police officer to take his life in just over a fortnight. On New Year's Eve, Chan Kin-hung, 34, killed himself with his service revolver in Ho Man Tin.

Kwok first tried to gas himself at his flat in Tai Wo Hau Estate. He then telephoned his brother-in-law, who persuaded him to leave the gas-filled flat, but he jumped from the corridor window. His parents and younger brother live opposite.

Kwok was posted to the New Territories North's Traffic Enforcement and Control Unit three months ago.
