Reclamation plans for the old airport site have led to a groundswell of opposition, the Citizens Party said yesterday as it revived an attempt to protect the harbour.
Party chairwoman Christine Loh Kung-wai said anger at the extent of reclamation planned for East Kowloon made it timely to extend the area of the harbour protected by law.
'There's resounding objection to the unimaginativeness of the plan and unnecessary reclamation of the harbour,' she said.
The proposed redevelopment of Kai Tak includes filling in the nullah and Kowloon Bay around the runway to create a 'city within a city', with reclamation outside the designated and safeguarded central harbour area.
Under a private member's bill drawn up by Ms Loh, the Protection of the Harbour Ordinance would be amended to include Kowloon Bay and Green Island.
The harbour would then be defined as the area from Lei Yue Mun Gap in the east to the western tips of Hong Kong and Tsing Yi islands.
It is now classified as the area between the Western Harbour Crossing and a line linking Hunghom and North Point.
