A Web site design competition has drawn more than 100 teams of participants from primary and secondary schools, showing that the use of information technology (IT) is gaining popularity among students.

The competition is part of the 'IT teaching and learning' programme organised by the Rotary Club of Sha Tin, Hong Kong Computer Society and Hong Kong Professional Teachers' Union.

The theme was 'Raising environmental awareness'. Forty-five primary school teams and 74 secondary school teams have joined the contest.

The 'IT teaching and learning' programme was divided into three stages. The first stage - a talk on environmental protection - was conducted after the opening ceremony to give participants a better understanding of green issues.

The second stage is a five-hour computer training course to be held later this month. Participants will learn about environmental protection, Internet usage and Web design. The third stage is the Web design contest. The deadline for entries is April 30.
