Parents complain that textbook costs for this academic year are unusually high, according to a survey conducted by the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong (DAB).

The cost of textbooks jumped by up to 20 per cent compared with last year, the survey revealed.

The sharpest increase was for Form Three textbooks, which have gone up by 18.6 per cent, to an average total of $3,027 this school year from $2,552 last year.

Housewife Chan Liang Lai-ling, whose two children are in Forms One and Three, was unhappy with the increase in textbook prices. Her annual budget for her children's textbooks was about $2,300.

'I spent more this year. A textbook that cost $150 last year has gone up to $200, with only few pages changed and pictures re-edited.

'I hope publishers can take into account our difficulties under the current economic situation. This is an unfair burden on parents,' she said.
