Most people stay away from the cinema because films are getting worse, a survey has shown.
Three in every five respondents said they watched movies less frequently last year, according to the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong poll.
An overwhelming 83 per cent said very few movies were worth watching.
Up to 72 per cent of the 592 respondents blamed ticket prices as being too expensive while 70 per cent named video compact disc and pay-television as alternatives.
Nearly 90 per cent reckoned pirated VCDs had hurt the industry. But 75 per cent agreed the inability to produce block-buster movies was the main reason why the industry was flagging.
Some 55 per cent said they watched more foreign films last year, outweighing local ones almost five times.
