Ofta probe urged after Net ruling

The Office of the Telecommunications Authority (Ofta) was accused of maladministration yesterday.

The Hong Kong Voice of Democracy group petitioned the ombudsman calling for a probe into Ofta's approval of the acquisition of Star Internet by Hongkong Telecom IMS on December 24.

'The acquisition allows IMS to monopolise [the market] with more than half the market share,' group spokesman Fung Chi-wood said.

Mr Fung urged the Ombudsman to look into Ofta's decision to determine if the Internet service provider market was wrongly assessed.

Analysts estimate the merger gave IMS Netvigator as many as 400,000 subscribers, or about 70 per cent of the market.
