National coach Sebastiao Araujo will leave Hong Kong after his contract expires in June.
The Hong Kong Football Association (HKFA) Council decided not to extend Araujo's contract, saying the association could no longer afford his services.
But it is understood that the HKFA was unimpressed by the local squad's recent poor performances, culminating in Guangdong's 2-1 aggregate victory over Hong Kong at this month's Guangdong-Hong Kong Cup.
Former Sing Tao coach Tsang Wai-chung will continue to be Araujo's number two, although the HKFA has not decided whether Tsang will succeed Araujo or not.
Araujo has already booked his flight to leave the SAR.
'Since football is no longer a Focus Sport, we cannot afford to retain Araujo anymore,' said HKFA chairman Victor Hui Chun-fui.
