A women's affairs commission should be set up to ensure women's rights are upheld, The Frontier has said in a UN submission.

Criticising the SAR's first women's rights report as superficial, the party said a commission for women was required to make up for the inadequacies of government institutions.

The proposed commission should be responsible for creating policies in the interests of women and monitoring provisions implemented by the United Nations' Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women.

However, such a body was rejected by the official report published last November. It said the Equal Opportunities Commission and legislation against sexual discrimination were adequate safeguards for women's rights.

The Frontier's Emily Lau Wai-hing, who will attend the convention hearing scheduled to start on Monday, said the Government had not painted the real picture in the report.

'The report is biased and superficial, contains all good news and no bad news, and does no help to eliminate discrimination against women,' the submission said.
