An old soldier and former Hong Kong resident returned from Britain yesterday to lay a wreath in memory of his brother, taken prisoner here by the Japanese in 1941.
Clifford Barratt-Pugh, 80, visited the Cenotaph in Central to pay tribute to his younger brother, Stanley Pugh, who was captured and taken to Japan at the age of 22.
More than 900 residents fought against the invading Japanese army in the Battle for Hong Kong in December 1941.
Stanley Pugh was a prisoner of war for more than three years. He returned to Hong Kong later and worked for Lane Crawford. He died in Britain 10 years ago.
Mr Barratt-Pugh served in Normandy during the war and worked as a teacher at the Gun Club Hill School in the early 1950s, when he and wife Stella lived in Hong Kong.
